Fun Family Project: How to Build a Bat House

I also used cedar fence pickets instead of exterior plywood because they were cheaper, and decided not to put a vent on the side due to the cold climate in Massachusetts. I enlisted the help of my oldest granddaughter, Jadyn, to help me build a couple bat houses. To keep the project approachable and safe for young woodworkers, I developed a system for cutting up plywood sheets into accurately machined project parts without the hazard of a table saw.

Architecture, construction and styling

We used self-drilling deck screws, and they worked like a charm. Lay out the two sides on a piece of exterior grade, 3⁄4” plywood. Use a protractor to mark the angles at the top of each side. Chuck the pattern bit into your router and trim the edges flush to your straight edge. Align the straight edge with your mark and clamp in place. Clamp the whole assembly to your bench or sawhorses to prevent shifting while you rout.

It is sure to catch the eyes of any visitors you have around your home. Then you could use the opportunity to share all of the wonderful things you’ve learned about bats. If you are going to create a home for bats on your property, then you might as well have fun with it. Which is exactly what the creator of this bat box did. They made the typical flat box for bats, but they made the rest of the box look like the Batman logo.

Using a staple gun, attach the netting to the inner edge of the top 1×2 and along the sides. Make sure to pull it taut so that it can’t sag when bats hang from it. Extend the netting all the way over the bottom edge, and wrap it around to the back. This is a great resource for someone that is a beginner in building anything but especially bat houses. It offers detailed instructions and pictures that help too. At this point, I took the wood and laid it together to get a sense of how this was going to look.

Step 3: Cutting and Shaping the Logo

Add to this list anything that frightens you, but refrain from being put off by the many benefits that bats can provide to your garden. Then glue and brad nail the 18-inch boards across the rails to form the middle panel. If you don’t have a jointer, you can skip face jointing for this project, and just edge joint on your table saw.

It gives away what this little house is for in a subtle way. It is solid wood so it doesn’t have to stand out as a ‘bat house’ unless you really wanted it to. This bat sanctuary looks like a pretty comfy home for a bat. The plans are very detailed and should be pretty easy to figure out, especially for someone with carpentry skills. Warmer climes may need to add slots for ventilation. Consult the Bat Conservation International website to see what modifications you may need for your part of the country. Square the front and back panels, then cut grooves. Once these two panels are dry according to the glue manufacturer’s instructions, trim both ends of one panel, squaring them to its edges. The easiest tool for this is a crosscut sled on your table saw.

The 1X2 inch pieces form the sides of the bat house and then there are two smaller pieces of plywood on top. I didn't know what color and initially I thought white to match my house trim. But then I checked their website and they have a map where you look up what color to paint your bat house. Designers Frank Slesinski and Serena Brosio collaborated on the charming living room in the Gatehouse.

You may even wish to read more about criteria for successful bat houses before deciding on measurements of your own. But, life doesn’t always hand you the size of wood you like. When was the last time you came across an almost 20″ width of solid board? And I am sure that bats would appreciate that old tree over a cut down and reassembled version any day.

Using a jigsaw or a scrollsaw, start cutting out the shape of your bat logo. If you decide to use a jigsaw, it's best to clamp your logo down to a table to avoid it moving as you work and causing you to cut the piece improperly. Take nibbles out of sections removing enough so that you can follow the next contour as closely as possible.

The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. There's quite a bit of opinion on whether painting, staining or leaving natural is better. Having built nearly a dozen boxes, I honestly don't think it matters, tho some weather stain will help it last longer, and the bats don't seem to care either way.

It looks very simple to build as it is just a flat birdhouse. However, a nice little detail is added to the outside of the bat house to make it stand out a little. See, this resource is about building the best bat house in Florida. It is a four-chamber nursery and according to this site, is a great choice for Floridians. However, it is smaller and more narrow so it can be stood on a pole so you don’t have to worry about climbing into a tree to hang it. If you don’t have a good tree to place a bat box in, then you might prefer something along the lines of this design.

Instead, opt for naturally weather-resistant woods such as cedar, white oak or reclaimed barn wood. These will last longer than soft pine, though you can still use this softer wood if your bat house will be sheltered or below an awning. If you have a combination of those conditions, you are free to start collecting materials to build a bat house.

Landscape architect Elisa Read Pappaterra filled the center fountain with cascading succulents. Cynthia Silverman created a nursery fit for a prince or princess, incorporating golden accents and whimsical touches, such as the hot-air balloon light and animal figurines. This is a simple, single chamber design using a mixture of recycled and new boards recovered from a shed build, and should house a good selection of bats for my needs. There is a slanted roof on the box, but due to the 'logo' on the front, it will tip toward the back, rather than the front. A 'runway' hangs down 4" from the body of the box allowing a place for the bats to land as they enter the box.

This bat house looks very similar to a modern birdhouse. It lays flat against a building or tree and shouldn’t take up much space at all. And not everyone has large trees that they can place their bat box in. So if you want a flatter bat house but want it on a pole instead of in a tree, then you might want to check out this site for some ideas on how to accomplish that successfully. They found a book with many plans in it and built one of them. Also, they give you a detailed materials list, pictures, and even a video to help you along with this build.
